The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) have announced the launch of the Water Transportation Study, which will examine potential new regional ferry services along the Massachusetts coast.
The 12-month study will assess possible improvements to existing MBTA ferry routes and infrastructure, consider new routes and terminal locations. It will also identify ways to improve multimodal access to current and potential ferry terminals.
The research aims to identify possible upgrades designed to enhance the customer experience.

MassDOT and MBTA officials will evaluate past and existing ferry services against projected future demand. Community engagement will play a central role, with opportunities for input through in-person and online public meetings, workshops, pop-up events, stakeholder discussions, and a dedicated website where documents and feedback forms will be available.
This study is part of a programme outlined in the 2022 Massachusetts Transportation Bond Bill.
