The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) Board of Commissioners has approved a 9.5 million USD contract with CDW Services, LLC to renovate the Algiers Ferry Terminal and the adjacent Ferry Maintenance Building.

The project, which forms part of RTA’s Strategic Mobility Plan, is intended to update facilities and address long-standing maintenance needs.

Planned work includes the removal of the pedestrian bridge, improvements to the main passenger access ramp, and redesigned circulation and landscaping with measures for stormwater management.

Inside the terminal, renovations will provide modern office space for RTA staff and improve areas for community use. The adjacent Ferry Maintenance Building will undergo waterproofing, HVAC replacement, and other essential repairs.

Construction is scheduled to begin later in 2025. The Algiers Ferry Terminal is expected to reopen in September 2026, with work on the maintenance building continuing until November 2026.

Lona Edwards Hankins, RTA Chief Executive Officer said:

This is an exciting moment for our riders, our neighbors in Algiers, and the entire region. These upgrades will ensure the Algiers Terminal is safer, more accessible, and more welcoming for the next generation. We are grateful to our federal, state, and local partners for their support, and we look forward to delivering a facility our community can be proud of.

The Algiers Ferry Terminal, located on the west bank of the Mississippi River, has long served as a key connection between Algiers and the city’s central business district.
