TUI River Cruises has confirmed plans to introduce two new-build vessels as part of its fleet development programme, with entry into service scheduled for 2028.

The announcement was made during the christening ceremony of TUI Aria in Frankfurt and reflects a continued focus on expanding the company’s river cruise operations.

The addition of the two ships will increase the fleet from six vessels in 2026 to ten by 2028. Operations are expected to cover a range of European waterways, including the Rhine and Douro, alongside the Nile programme.

The new vessels are being designed with consideration for future propulsion technologies, including the potential use of methanol. Each ship will accommodate 188 guests across 94 cabins. The design approach includes updated onboard features, revised interior layouts and multiple public spaces, while maintaining the service structure associated with the brand.

The ships are intended primarily for the UK market, with an emphasis on flexibility in itinerary planning and onboard experience. The company has indicated that customer demand for river cruising, particularly for itineraries focused on cultural and regional experiences, has contributed to its decision to expand capacity.

Katy Berzins,Head of River Cruises at TUI River Cruises said:

Announcing our new-build ships marks a major milestone for TUI River Cruises and signals our continued investment in the future of our fleet. These new ships, purpose-built for our customers, reflect our ambition for growth and our commitment to delivering an elevated, modern river cruising experience. They will embody the flexibility and choice TUI River Cruises represents in modern river cruising, allowing culturally immersive holidays to come to life on the river.

The christening of TUI Aria took place on the Rhine in Frankfurt and included formal naming proceedings and a series of onboard events. The vessel is the largest refurbished ship to join the company’s European fleet to date.

TUI River Cruises operates within the wider TUI Group expansion division. Its current European fleet includes TUI Isla, TUI Skyla, TUI Maya and TUI Aria, while its Nile programme operates TUI Al Horeya and TUI Bahareya. A further vessel, TUI Elara, is expected to enter service in 2027, alongside TUI Luzia, which will operate on the Douro.

The two newly announced ships form part of a broader programme aimed at increasing capacity and updating fleet capability over the coming years.
